Final election count: Sayville leaned heavily for Trump

|

It seems the closer you live to the water in Sayville, the more likely you were to have voted for president-elect Joe Biden.

In the Sayville communities by the bay, 49.9 percent of voters picked Biden, compared to 48.8 percent for Trump. One person down there voted for Kanye West.

Still, most everywhere else in Sayville and West Sayville proved to be Trump territory, according to numbers released by the Suffolk County Board of Elections.

The outgoing president, who continues to dispute his decisive overall loss in the presidential election to Biden and has yet to concede, won 13 of the 16 election districts in zip codes 11782 and 11796. And he won most of them decisively.

In total, he took 53.9 percent of the Sayville and West Sayville vote. Biden had 44.4 percent of the vote.

Trump’s strongest performance in Sayville was in Election District 161, an area loosely bordered by Target on Sunrise Highway, Broadway Avenue and the Islip Grange. The outgoing president took an overwhelming 59.8 percent of the vote in an area that includes Sunrise Drive Elementary School.

Trump also performed quite well in Election District 130, gaining 57.7 percent of the vote to Biden’s 40.1. Of the four districts by the bay, ED 130 — which is boxed by Main Street, Greene Avenue, Clyde Street and the bay — was the only bayside district where Trump won a majority of the vote.

Biden’s most decisive Sayville win was in Election District 19, located on the east side of Greene Avenue. He took 53.3 percent of the vote there.

Based on election night returns, it seemed Trump would win Suffolk County going away. But numbers released this week by the Board of Elections — after all mailed-in ballots had been counted — showed that Trump edged Biden by 232 votes. Trump had 49.4 percent of the vote; Biden had 49.37 percent.

In 2016, Trump defeated Hillary Clinton by nearly 27,000 votes in Suffolk. In 2020, there was an increase of more than 93,000 voters over 2016’s turnout.
