Sayville teens install a second ‘Little Free Pantry,’ this one at the library

|

Five freshmen friends from Sayville High School have helped bring a second Little Free Pantry to Sayville.

The girls on Thursday took part in a ribbon cutting ceremony in front of the Sayville Public Library, where their latest Little Free Pantry stands next to the building’s Little Free Library.

“We are honored that the Sayville Library was picked as the second location for a Little Free Pantry in Sayville!” read a statement put out by the library.

The five students — Molly Brady, Courtney Thornton, Fallon Santoro, Loghan McNamara and Ellie Sheehan  — kicked off the local initiative in December with a GoFundMe page.

Initially, their goals were modest: They hoped to raise about $1,000 to pick up the cost of two pantry sheds and two installation posts. But they have since raised more than $4,100, and now plan to put up other free pantry boxes in the area.

Similar to how a Little Free Library works with books, a Little Free Pantry is a spot where people can leave or take dry, non-perishable food.

In March, the girls celebrated Sayville’s first Little Free Pantry in a ribbon-cutting ceremony outside of the Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce house on Main Street.

The teens filled the pantry with food and each received a certificate of excellence from the chamber.

“There were so many donations through the GoFundMe page that now we can have a lot more locations,” said during the first Little Free Pantry ribbon cutting ceremony.
