Harry O. D’Onofrio, a retired NYPD detective and an ex-chief of the West Sayville Fire Department, died on Wednesday, April 14. He was 61.
D’Onofrio of Bohemia was a 43-year volunteer member of the West Sayville Fire Department, wearing such hats as dispatcher, press officer and department photographer. His sons Brian and Patrick serve as first and second assistant chiefs, respectively, with the fire department.
He was a detective in the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit, working in the search and recovery effort in the smoldering rubble of the World Trade Center following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.
D’Onofrio had suffered with a Sept. 11 related illness.
In retirement, he had been working as a school security guard.
The beloved community figure is also survived by his wife, Merrill; his mother Peggy; his sister Kathy King; two brothers, John and Billy; and three grandchildren, Tyler, Sean and Ava.
