A late second-half goal broke a scoreless tie and gave Sayville a 1-0 first-round playoff win over Miller Place Tuesday in girls soccer.

Freshman Courtney Thornton scored the game winner with less than two minutes remaining, sending the Golden Flashes (10-3) to the quarterfinals of Suffolk County’s “A” playoff bracket. Goalkeeper Jackie DuTot secured the shutout.

Sayville is set to host East Islip at 4 p.m. on Thursday. East Islip (8-3-2) knocked off Bayport-Blue Point to advance.

Sayville girls soccer continues its quest for a county title today, hosting a first-round playoff match with Miller Place.

The Golden Flashes, seeded fourth in Suffolk’s “A” bracket, won nine of their 12 regular season games and placed second in League VI, just behind Islip (9-1-2). The winner of Sayville’s 4 p.m. match with Miller Place will face the winner of the first-round match between fifth-seeded East Islip (7-3-2) and the 12th seed, Bayport-Blue Point (8-2-1).

“Although the COVID lockout was difficult, each team member stayed in close contact with each other to keep the team bond going,” Coaches Coaches John Burke and Bob Holmes said in a statement.

The team’s success in its inaugural spring season was largely due to the bond it sustained while practicing in the fall. Led by team captains Emma Famularo and Kerri Gunther, Sayville has kept focus on its motto: “One school. One team. One dream.”

The girls and coaches with Sayville created an inspiring video last summer and dedicated it to frontline workers. Check out “Keep the Ball Moving” below.

“I feel all this teamwork has followed this team and accelerated there season here in the spring,” Coach Holmes said.
