Sayville lax alumna is conference Rookie of the Week at college

|

West Sayville two-sport star Kimberly McCarthy has hit the ground running in her freshman year at Castleton University — on the field and in the classroom.

The 2020 Sayville High School graduate on Monday received the Little East Conference’s Co-Rookie of the Week honors for women’s lacrosse. On Tuesday, McCarthy was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) 2020 Division III Scholars of Distinction list.

To get on the Scholars of Distinction list, she achieved a GPA above 3.9 during her first semester at the Vermont school this fall. To earn Co-Rookie of the Week honors, she scored six goals and assisted on another in leading Castleton to 16-9 win over Mitchell College in her collegiate debut.

McCarthy lead the team in scoring during the season’s opening week, also scoring Castleton’s only goal in the Spartans’ loss to St. Lawrence.

After scoring another goal during Castleton’s loss to Utica on Monday, McCarthy leads the Spartans in goals, points and shots on goal through the season’s first three games. She has recorded the second most ground balls and draw controls.

In January, McCarthy was named to the Castleton Dean’s List for the fall semester. During her senior year at Sayville, McCarthy and her field hockey teammates earned national recognition from the NFHCA for their classroom performance.
