Behrendt Court in Sayville will be renamed Sgt. James P. Bast Way to honor the 23-year NYPD veteran who died last year from an illness related to Sept. 11.

Islip Town, with the assistance of the NYPD Ceremonial Unit, will honor the fallen officer on April 6 with a special street renaming ceremony. The event will take place at 10:30 a.m.

Bast and his wife Kristin raised their three children, James, Thomas and Megan, in Sayville. He was a coach in several youth programs in the community.

Bast was a Sept. 11 first responder and part of the police force’s Intelligence Bureau’s Municipal Security Section. After his retirement, he was a member of former Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s private security team.

Bast, 49, died on Jan. 14, 2020.
