Commitment to service: Connetquot High School’s Helping Hands Club

|

Students in Connetquot High School’s Helping Hands Club continue this school year to stay true to their commitment to service — by helping people and businesses struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The club has played a key role in “The Takeout Project,” a Long Island-based initiative providing local food pantries with gift cards to local restaurants. The effort helps feed community members in need, while supporting local businesses adversely affected by the pandemic.

Students in the club collect gift cards and monetary donations to help “The Takeout Project” achieve its goal.

For years, the club, led by advisers Susan Schiappa and Lynn Parks, has regularly taken part in philanthropic endeavors in the community. Other efforts have included donated backpacks filled with school supplies to local families in need and providing holiday meals to community members.

The student also have participated in fundraising to assist people struggling due to unfortunate circumstances, such as illness, death, house fires and loss of jobs. With each effort, the goal is to make the world a better place, the school district said.
