Cricket’s and Starbucks in Sayville both temporarily closed

|

Cricket’s and Starbucks — major contributors to downtown Sayville’s unique vibe — are both temporarily closed for reasons related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cricket’s’ closure announcement on Facebook says the longtime restaurant favorite will re-open on Jan. 19.

“Thank you all for your kind words and concern,” the eatery said on Facebook. “Everyone is thankfully fine at the moment. We’re staying closed out of caution due to the pandemic. See you soon!”

The outgoing voicemail message on Cricket’s’ main number reiterates that the restaurant decided to close from Jan. 7-19 “for the safety” of its staff and patrons.

Starbucks corporate office confirmed to GreaterSayville.com that the downtown Sayville location closed Jan. 7 and will reopen on Jan. 16. The temporary closure and a deep cleaning of the coffee shop came after two employees — referred to as Starbucks “partners” — were diagnosed with COVID-19.

“The safety and wellbeing of our partners and communities have and will continue to be our top priority as we navigate COVID-19,” a Starbucks spokesperson told GreaterSayville.com. “To read more about the steps we are taking to prioritize health and safety, you can visit Starbucks.com/COVID-19 and our customer ‘At a Glance’ guide.”

Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce President Eileen Tyznar said that as hard as it is to ever see any Main Street business need to temporarily close, it is commendable that “Crickets and Starbucks are taking all the necessary precautions and protocols in order to keep our community safe.”

“Our numbers are on the rise and we need to practice all CDC guidelines and safety protocols,” she added, “more than ever before to avoid spreading of the virus and risking increased shutdowns of our small businesses.”

With a new Starbucks being proposed for West Sayville, the downtown location has long been expected to close in the near future. But a timetable on when exactly that will happen has not been announced.
