Sayville’s Jack Coan is transferring to Notre Dame

|

That didn’t take long. Jack Coan has picked the Fighting Irish.

The legendary Sayville quarterback is transferring from Wisconsin to play football as a graduate student at Notre Dame next fall. Coan, who as a junior led Wisconsin to the Rose Bowl in the 2019 season and was slated to start this season before he was sidelined by a foot injury, announced his decision tonight via Twitter.

A rare Tweeter (his last Tweet was in 2017), Coan wrote that he is “extremely thankful for the opportunity. Let’s get to work.”

Coan entered the college football transfer portal two weeks ago, just after Wisconsin completed its regular season. He injured his right foot during a pre-season practice in October and needed surgery.

Though he recovered in time to suit up for the Badgers’ final three games, he never reached the playing field. Meanwhile, he completed the requirements for his undergraduate degree.

Early in his high school career, Coan had made a verbal commitment to play lacrosse at Notre Dame — before the football scholarship offers began pouring in.

Heading into the 2020 season, the 6-foot-3 signal caller was picked by Pro Football Focus as one of college football’s six “hidden offensive gems.” He also landed on watch lists for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award and the Manning Award.

On Friday, Notre Dame lost to Alabama 31-14 in the Rose Bowl, a semi-final in the national championship playoffs. Notre Dame’s starting quarterback Ian Book is graduating, and the Irish’s returning quarterbacks have seven pass attempts combined.

So it would seem that Coan — a quarterback with Big Ten experience and a Rose Bowl appearance under his belt — would have a strong chance of starting.
