Sayville’s Jack Coan transferring from Wisconsin

|

Maybe Jack Coan will play closer to home next fall.

Rutgers head football coach Greg Schiano sure could use a quarterback with the kind of Big Ten chops that Coan brings to the table.

Coan — the Sayville football legend who in 2019 had one of the best quarterback seasons in the history of Wisconsin football — entered the college football transfer portal this weekend with the intention of playing at a different big-time college football program.

“Jack coan is officially in the transfer portal,” Coan’s dad Mike announced Sunday on Twitter, “he is leaving Wisconsin”

Following a brilliant fall 2019 campaign in which Coan led the Badgers to the Rose Bowl, and a narrow loss to Oregon, college football analysts were anticipating a big encore from the 6-foot-3 senior. Pro Football Focus picked Coan as one of college football’s six “hidden offensive gems,” and he landed on watch lists for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award and the Manning Award.

But Coan injured his right foot during pre-season practice in October and needed surgery. He was in uniform for Wisconsin’s final three games, but never reached the playing field.

Wherever he winds up going, Coan will play as a graduate student. He started college a semester early back in the spring of 2017, and this month graduated with a bachelor’s degree.

On Sunday afternoon, Wisconsin posted a heartwarming message from Coan on Twitter.
