Northwell Health President and CEO Michael J. Dowling ranked second on Modern Healthcare magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare” list.

Dowling was acknowledged for his leadership during the spring’s COVID-19 surge in New York.

The No. 1 spot on the prestigious list belonged to ‘the frontline worker,’ as the magazine paid homage to nurses, doctors, respiratory therapists, environmental service workers, administrators and other healthcare workers for putting their lives at risk while delivering compassionate care for patients.

Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, ranked ninth on the list. Deborah Birx, who serves with Fauci on the White House Coronavirus Task Force, is 31st.

President Donald Trump is 28th, dropping 19 slots from No. 9 on the magazine’s 2019 “Most Influential People in Healthcare” list. No. 20 was Susan Bailey, president of the American Medical Association, who rebutted Trump’s claims that doctors make more money when they diagnose patients with COVID-19.

Dowling’s leadership during spring surge

In an article published on its website, Northwell Health — which includes South Shore University Hospital in Islip — noted that “Dowling’s innovation, leadership and strong stance on social issues such as gun violence as a public health crisis, as well as immigration and the opioid epidemic, have also contributed to him earning a place” on Modern Health Healthcare’s prestigious list for the 14th consecutive year.

Northwell President and CEO Michael Dowling.

“This year has shown us how vulnerable we are to the various pandemics facing health care,” Dowling said. “COVID-19 devastated us. Gun violence continues to cripple us. And there are numerous other issues that are keeping our communities from thriving. It is our responsibility to partner with them to finally move the needle in the right direction.”

Dowling is credited for his vision and crisis management expertise — for helping manage the spring surge of COVID-19 cases across Long Island, New York City and the state; establishing one of the nation’s testing centers at Northwell Laboratories and developing approaches to alleviate supply and staffing shortages.

Northwell Health facilities have treated 101,000 COVID-19 patients, including 16,000 who were hospitalized, more than any other hospital system in the country.
