Rocky the Christmas tree owl takes flight with Frontier Airlines at MacArthur Airport

|

They’re calling it an “uplifting tail.”

Remember Rocky — that adorable Saw-whet owl named Rockefeller after it was rescued by a worker setting up the holiday tree last month at Rockefeller Center in the city?

Long Islanders are about to become a lot more familiar with her cute little face. That’s because Rocky will soon be featured on a new Frontier Airlines Airbus 320neo aircraft tail, announced the low-fare carrier, which flies out of Long Island MacArthur Airport.

The “Rocky the Owl” aircraft is scheduled for delivery in 2021. All Frontier Airlines planes feature animals on their tails, many of which represent endangered species.

Little Rocky took flight for real Nov. 24 when she was released back into the wild by her caretakers at Ravensbeard Wildlife Center in Saugerties, New York. Her release came eight days after she was found — having been possibly trapped — inside the 75-foot Norway spruce that had been cut down in upstate New York and hauled 170 miles to Manhattan.

Check out Rocky’s release to the wild below:

“She is a tough little bird and we’re happy to see her back in her natural habitat,” the Ravensbeard Wildlife Center posted on Facebook. “We are sure that Rocky will feel your love and support through her journey south.”

Meanwhile, Frontier officials are happy to have Rocky’s image flying all over the country.

“We’re always looking for new ideas for our plane tails and when we heard the story of Rocky, we thought it entirely befitting that this intrepid little owl be honored on one of our tails,” said Tyri Squyres, vice president of marketing for Frontier Airlines.

“Rocky will be remembered for years to come with her very special story enjoyed by thousands of travelers who fly on ‘Rocky the Owl.’”

Cool facts about Saw-whet owls

It’s no surprise Rocky kept herself hidden so well. “Avoiding notice is a task at which this owl often succeeds; it is overlooked in many places where it occurs,” reports the National Audubon Society. Here are some other cool facts about the diminutive bird, from the audubon society.

When does a Saw-whet owl hunt?

Owls like Rocky hunt almost entirely at night, mostly by waiting on low perches and then swooping down on prey.

How many eggs does a Saw-whet owl lay?

The mother typically lays 5-6 eggs, and remains in nest almost constantly from time first egg is laid, while the father brings food to her throughout this time. The mother remains with chicks until youngest is about 18 days old. The chicks leave the nest at about 4-5 weeks, then remain together near the nest and are fed (mostly by the father) for at least another four weeks.

The Saw-whet owl feeds mostly on small rodents — typically deer mice and voles in the forest.

Where does a Saw-whet owl nest?

The Saw-whet owl’s nest site is in a tree cavity, usually 15-60 feet above ground.
