Community sets up ‘Save the Station Pub!’ GoFundMe page after Sayville bar loses liquor license

|

Sayville community members have established a GoFundMe account to help out a popular bar struggling to survive in wake of having its liquor license revoked due to COVID-19 safety violations.

Last month, New York’s State Liquor Authority pulled the liquor license from Station Pub on Railroad Avenue. Already struggling due to social distancing and crowd regulations, owner Steve Rubino can now only serve food and soda.

“These regulations and restrictions have left Steve and so many other small pubs struggling to keep their doors open,” reads the description of the “Save the Station Pub!” GoFundMe page. “He and his employees have been trying so hard to keep everyone safe, as well as keeping his doors open.

“This would be such a loss to all in this community, if he can not remain open,” the description continued.

The fundraising page was started by Ashley Johansen and Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce President Eileen Tyznar.

“Steve has been very giving to this town,” Tyznar said. “It’s been very hard for the pubs and restaurants to be under such duress and scrutiny with the COVID-19 regulations and make any money.”

Rubino opened the pub three years ago, establishing a relaxed atmosphere for the community to eat, drink and enjoy live music. The pub has since hosted dozens of fundraisers for other community members in need.

Station Pub has hosted fundraisers for local people who experienced the loss of loved ones, people with terminal illnesses, struggling businesses, and youth sports groups.

“Steve had a HUGE fundraiser for the newly built Lt. Michael P. Murphy NAVY Seal Museum,” the GoFundMe page states. “He is always an includer, bringing many different people together to socialize and to have a good time.”

Open daily from noon to 10 p.m., Station Pub is located on Railroad Avenue, just north of the railroad tracks and near the Sayville Train Station.
