New York bars and gyms must close by 10 p.m., says new rule designed to curb rising COVID-19 numbers

What’s left of New York’s nightlight is about to be upended for the foreseeable future.

With COVID-19 cases picking up across the state — and throughout the country — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the following directive via Twitter:

“NYS is taking action to stop the spread in response to rising COVID numbers,” he wrote. “Any establishment with a state liquor license, including bars and restaurants, must close at 10 p.m. Gyms must also close at 10 p.m.”

The measure reportedly doesn’t apply to curbside pickup and delivery.

Private gatherings will also be capped at 10 people, according to the governor.

These new rules will go into effect statewide Friday at 10 p.m.

Cuomo announced these new regulations days after New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy passed similar measures.

New cases in New York and New Jersey have doubled in over a week. As of today in NYS, there were 4,820 new cases in the state with a positive rate of 2.93 percent.

In Suffolk County, 3.4 percent of those tested in the last day tested positive for COVID-19. The county reported 412 new cases since yesterday, including 77 people who needed to be hospitalized and one death.
