The student theatre troupe at Sayville High School adapted to the challenges presented by COVID-19 this fall and produced a compelling film that “examines the masks we wear.” Released just in time for Halloween, “Halloween Masks” is bound to receive outstanding reviews.
Social-distancing restrictions prevented the troupe from staging its traditional fall performance in front of a live audience. So the group turned to film instead.
The seven-minute short, written by Eddie James and directed by Asher DeVerna and Nick Rampulla, explores masks as a metaphor in a Halloween-party setting, during which the characters unmask the illusions of public perception with private issues of self-esteem.
It’s the Sayville Players first-ever film production.
Sayville school district officials said “Halloween Masks” is timely not just for Halloween, but also because it illustrates the October trait of self-esteem in Sayville S.T.R.I.D.E.S., the social and emotional wellness initiative.
