Sayville alum Steven Alvarez — a running back and stalwart defensive end on the Golden Flashes’ 2008 Long Island Champion team — has the spotlight on him again.
This time, he’s with the U.S. Army.
Spc. Alvarez is the 2-20 Field Artillery Battalion‘s Spotlight soldier this week. In a Q & A interview posted on the battalion’s Facebook page, Alvarez details why he enlisted in the Army and why Hispanic Heritage Month is important to him.
Full of pride, Sayville varsity football coach Reade Sands shared the great news about Alvarez on Sayville Football’s Facebook account.
“One of our Own. One of the toughest DE [defensive ends],” Sands wrote, sharing 2-20 Field Artillery Battalion‘s post about Alvarez. “Thank you for your service Alvarez.”
Alvarez noted the importance of Hispanic Heritage Month, stressing that it highlights the diverse Hispanic Americans “who choose to serve and protect.”
“I don’t really celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, it’s something I take pride in everyday,” Alvarez said in the interview.
“I think Hispanic Heritage Month is more for other people of different heritage to become more aware of the countless Hispanic people and customs that have had an impact on the landscape of the country, from food to professional sports and even political public office.”
