Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan is expected to miss the team’s opener later this month and is out indefinitely after suffering a foot injury in practice, according to reports.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported this weekend that the Sayville standout injured his right foot and will undergo surgery.
In his briefing with the media Monday morning, Wisconsin football coach Paul Chryst confirmed there was a “setback” with Coan and that he was going to “see a specialist.”
Chryst noted that Coan was injured while dropping back to pass.
Coan has started 18 games for Wisconsin over the last two seasons. Last year, he passed for 2,727 yards and 18 touchdowns, helping lead the Badgers to appearances in the Big Ten Championship and the Rose Bowl. His 151.8 passing efficiency rating was good enough for 19th in the nation last fall.
With Coan behind center, the Badgers were poised this season to make a run at a Big Ten title and the national championship. Just last month after initially postponing the fall season until the spring, the Big Ten elected to begin play this month. Wisconsin’s Oct. 24 opener is at home against Illinois.
Heading into the season, Pro Football Focus picked Coan as one of college football’s six “hidden offensive gems.” He is also on watch lists for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award and the Manning Award.
