Downtown Sayville officially welcomes its first holistic dog food and supply store this week.
Purity Barn, the brainchild of local businessman and lifelong dog lover Matt Reagan, opens Thursday at 10 a.m., then hosts a special ribbon cutting ceremony with the Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Located next to Sayville Pizza and Richard’s Stride Right — in the storefront formerly occupied by JD Chandlery — Purity Barn is all about “getting natural, basic food back to your dog,” said Klea Papuli, a manager at the store.
That mission is built on the shop’s four pillars: nourishment, natural healing, rescue and training.
Purity Barn will offer quality brand raw, freeze dried, gently cooked and kibble food, along with goats milk, bone broth and elixirs, said Papuli, who added that the store will also cater to cats.
The shop has partnered with Super Snouts to offer hemp products and Glacier Peak Holistics for supplements, and it will make available a Glacier Peak stress test to identify external stressors a dog may be experiencing in its environment.
On the rescue front, Papuli noted that Purity Barn is partnering with rescue groups to help raise funds and donate to centers, as well as connect humans to their future pets. Lastly, Purity Barn will provide access to trainers, books, videos and tools to help with training dogs.
Papuli said Purity Barn is offering a subscription service that will enable pet owners to subscribe to weekly, bi-weekly or monthly deliveries of food and treats.
The stress test offered at the shop will help owners understand which environments and what food may be triggering stress in their dogs, Papuli said. Purity Barn will develop food plans based on the test results.
Pet owners will choose between going to the shop or using a video call to discuss the results of the stress tests.
“We want our community to come in and gain a better knowledge of how to better care for their dogs’ well-being and make sure they have all the proper tools and information needed to do so,” Papuli said.
“Whether it be an owner whose dog is not doing so well on kibble and they want to create a better meal plan for them, for dogs who have nutritional restrictions, or for healthy dogs whose owners want to just add a little extra nutrition to their diet.”
Greater Sayville of Commerce President Eileen Tyznar said she is ecstatic that Purity Barn has pitched its tent in Sayville.
“It is so nice to have healthy choices for our furry friends, and the fact that they support local dog rescue organizations is an added bonus,” Tyznar said.
A passion project
Reagan, who runs a family-owned steel distribution business that successfully supplied materials to the aerospace industry for decades, has been working on the Purity Barn project for many years, Papuli said. When the steel business dried up a bit due to COVID-19, Reagan realized it was the right time to turn his idea into reality, Papuli said.
Reagan, who is taking on his passion project with his son Liam working alongside him, recently lost his beloved golden retriever Rocky. While caring for Rocky, he “learned more about how good nutrients and more moisture into a dogs diet can greatly help so many health related issues,” Papuli said.
Having lived in the area his entire life, Reagan is passionate about Sayville, Papuli said.
“He wanted to do something to give back to the community he cares about,” she said. “Sayville is a dog-loving-town, and we want a great place for our community to come learn, interact, and share their passion for dogs and cats.”
Purity Barn will be open Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
