Islip Town and Sayville honor fallen NYPD officer with street renaming

|

Islip Town and the Sayville community this week honored an NYPD transit officer who died in 2009 from a Sept. 11 related illness with a street renaming and dedication ceremony.

The intersection of Versa Place and Lowell Road in Sayville was renamed Robert A. Zane Jr. Way, honoring the Sayville resident and his legacy in the community.

Zane, who grew up in Sayville, had lived with his family in a Lowell Road home he purchased in 2005. He is survived by his wife Tracy and their two children, Robert “Bobby” Zane III, 15, and Abigail, 12.

Bobby Zane wrote to Islip Town officials seeking the renaming honor for his dad, and with his grandfather, Robert Zane Sr., helped pull off the ceremony on Monday, Sept. 14. Zane’s relatives, along with many members of the community and local first responders, attended the event.

Robert Zane Jr. died in May 2009 from kidney cancer, a diagnosis that was tied to his heroic work during the rescue effort at the World Trade Center in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. He was 45 when he died; his children were 3 and 1.

He posthumously received the NYPD Distinguished Service Medal in 2011 and his name has been added to memorials across the country, including the 9/11 Responders Remembered Park in Nesconset, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., and the New York City Police Officers memorial wall.
