Big Ten football is back — and you know what that means for Sayville: One of the community’s favorite sons gets another chance to pursue a national championship as Wisconsin’s No. 1 quarterback.
Jack Coan is set to lead the Badgers’ offense, starting with its opening game on Oct. 24, now that the Big Ten athletic conference’s Council of Presidents and Chancellors has voted to play football in fall 2020. Each Big Ten team will play an eight-game conference schedule leading up to a Dec. 19 conference championship game. In August, the conference had postponed the season until spring over health concerns relating to COVID-19.
College football pundits expect big things this season from Coan, who already earned the nickname “Jacky Heisman” while leading Wisconsin in 2019 to an appearance in the Rose Bowl and a No. 11 ranking in the final AP Top 25 poll.
This spring, he was tabbed by Pro Football Focus as one of college football’s six “hidden offensive gems” for the 2020 season. He has also been put on watch lists for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award and the Manning Award, an honor given to the nation’s top signal caller at the end of the season.
Last year, in his first full season as the starting quarterback, Coan threw for more than 2,700 yards and tossed 17 touchdown passes.
His fans were more than pleased with the news that Big Ten football was back in play this fall, taking to Twitter to express their giddiness. Among them was Coan’s high school football coach Rob Hoss.
