Report: Connetquot grad and Orlando Magic assistant GM is NBA team’s ‘Bubble MVP’

|

NBA executive and 1986 Connetquot High School graduate Pete D’Alessandro has emerged as the Orlando Magic’s “bubble MVP,” according to a published report.

D’Alessandro, an assistant general manager with the Magic since 2017, played a vital role in breaking down and simplifying the league’s memo concerning COVID-19, the testing policy for the virus and rules for life inside the NBA’s isolation zone at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, writes Josh Robbins of The Athletic.

The league created the bubble to protect its players from the pandemic as 22 NBA teams finish the 2019-20 season, including the ongoing playoffs.

D’Alessandro, who previously was the general manager of the Sacramento Kings, spearheaded the effort to condense a 113-page memo into a 10-page synopsis in less than 24 hours. The executive’s handiwork has served as a bubble road map for the Magic’s front office, along with its players, coaches and medical staff, according to the report.

D’Alessandro has worked in the front office of numerous other NBA teams. He has been lauded in the past for his NBA salary cap expertise.

The Magic, down 3-1, in an Eastern Conference first-round playoff series against the Milwaukee Bucks, were scheduled to play Game 5 on Wednesday. The Bucks, however, boycotted the contest, in protest of the Sunday police shooting of Jacob Blake, 29, a black man, in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

The Bucks’ boycott came amid growing public outrage over the shooting. The series is expected to continue on Friday.
