Governor: New York state schools can reopen

|

School’s in!

So says Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who cleared the way Friday for New York schools to reopen next month.

With every region of the state well below the state’s COVID-19 infection limit, the governor authorized that all school districts can re-open for in-class teaching.

If the infection rate spikes, the guidance will change accordingly, he said. School districts were required to submit their individual plans to the state by last Friday.

The state will require the quick implementation of the following from all school districts:

• Post their remote learning plans and their testing/tracing plans online.

• Set dates for three to five discussion sessions with parents and the community prior to Aug 21.

• Have at least one separate discussion with teachers alone.

• Masks are required when social distancing is impossible. Every student must have one with them at all times. The school will be required to provide a mask if a student does not have one.

Of the 70,170 coronavirus tests reported yesterday, 714 were positive — 1% of the total, Cuomo reported. COVID-19 hospitalizations are at 579 and there were five COVID-19 deaths across the state yesterday, he said.
