At least 2,000 in Sayville area still without power; PSEG says service will be restored by late Saturday

|

At least 2,000 PSEG customers in the Greater Sayville area remain without power nearly three days after Tropical Storm Isaias bashed Long Island, according to figures on the power utility’s website.

“We haven’t been able to get through to PSEG for days,” said Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce President Eileen Tyznar, whose Sayville home was severely damaged in Tuesday’s storm. “And we haven’t seen a truck on this block.”

PSEG’s “Power Map” as of 10:30 a.m. indicated power outages across the Greater Sayville area — from Great River to Blue Point — as well as throughout Long Island.

Late Thursday night, PSEG confirmed that “fewer than 108,000 Long Island customers” were still without electricity. That was down from 160,000 a day earlier.

“We estimate 85% of customers will be restored by end of day Friday, with the remainder restored by end of day Saturday,” PSEG assured in a Facebook post.

Workers from 10 states in restoration effort

“On Long Island, the storm’s impact on telecommunication networks affected our ability to respond to customer calls as quickly as we wanted,” PSEG CEO Ralph Izzo said in a message to customers posted on the company’s website. “However, at no time did the challenges PSEG Long Island faced with our communications systems impact our restoration efforts.

“We have still been able to assess the full extent of the damage and dispatch crews to the impacted areas,” he added.

PSEG has said the numbers on its “Power Map” are a bit behind what the actual power outage figures are, explaining that the work is getting done quicker than the company can update the numbers on its website, due to the large number of off-island crews brought into the service area.

PSEG said workers from 10 states — including as far away as Missouri, Kentucky and Florida — are working on the restoration effort.
