The west terminal apron at Islip’s Long Island MacArthur Airport is getting an $8.6 million facelift this summer.
Construction started last week to remove and replace 28,000 square yards of concrete. It’s the first time the concrete has been replaced in 34 years. Officials said they expect the project will take about four months.
Funding for the project comes from a $3.3 million Airport Capital Improvement Grant administered by the Federal Aviation Administration. The grant does not require a local or Passenger Facility Charge match.
Money for the project is also coming from Supplemental Discretionary Grant funds from the FY2018 Omnibus Bill H.R. 1645.
“The West Terminal Apron is a critical part of the airport’s infrastructure and is used to park aircraft near the terminal jet bridge. This project is the second construction project that will occur at the airport in 2020,” said Airport Commissioner of Aviation Shelley LaRose-Arken.
Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter thanked U.S. Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, as well as U.S. Rep. Peter King for supporting the airport and for advocating for important development projects.
