Community leaders and library officials gathered this month to break ground on the new Bayport-Blue Point Public Library at the former St. Ursula Center convent.
The library will convert the center into a new 28,573-square-foot facility, more than twice the size of the current library. Demolition work begins this month; with construction expected to take 12 to 15 months.
The library completed its $3.65 million purchase of the property, located at 186 Middle Road in Blue Point, in February 2019.
Officials had hoped to host a large, public event to mark the groundbreaking. But the event was limited in scope due to precautions relating to COVID-19.
The Library District recently awarded five construction grants representing a total dollar amount of $11,279,350. The successful bids cover five construction categories: site, general, mechanical, plumbing and electrical. The contractors are all based on Long Island.
