Sayville great Jack Coan — aka the “Long Island Laser” and “Jacky Heisman” — is on the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award watchlist.
The annual award goes to the country’s top signal caller. Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow of the nation champions LSU earned the award last season.
Coan was among the nation’s best quarterbacks in 2019, in terms of completion percentage and passing efficiency. In his first full season as Wisconsin’s starting quarterback, threw for more than 2,700 yards and had 17 touchdown passes.

Davey O’Brien watchlist. The annual award is given to the nations best college quarterback. Last season the award was given to Heisman Trophy winner, LSU’s QB Joe Burrow.
Coan is one of 30 quarterbacks to make the cut, and is one of four Big Ten representatives. He is joined by Justin Fields of Ohio State, Sean Clifford of Penn State and Tanner Morgan of Minnesota. Last season Coan was one of the country’s best in terms of completion percentage and passing efficiency with over 2700 yards passing, 18 touchdowns and five interceptions.
The list will be narrowed down on three finalists on November 24, with the winning honoree being acknowledged Dec. 10 during The Home Depot College Football Awards.
“Compiled by a subset of the Davey O’Brien National Selection Committee, this year’s list was selected based on career player performance and expectations heading into the 2020 college football season,” read an announcement from the Davey O’Brien Foundation. “All nominees are required to have previously started at least one game at an NCAA Division I institution.”
Earlier this year, Coan was mentioned by Pro Football Focus as one of college football’s six “hidden offensive gems” for the 2020 season.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA football season still hangs in the balance. Earlier this month, the Big Ten conference, which includes Wisconsin, announced that if the NCAA were able to conduct a fall sports season, Big Ten teams would only play games with other conference members.
