Sayville High School Class of 2020 valedictorian and salutatorian honored

Sayville High School’s Class of 2020 valedictorian Brendan Dillon and salutatorian Lauren Flaumenhaft received glowing praise from their principal during a recent virtual Board of Education meeting.

Dillon this fall will attend Boston College, where he intends to further his interest in artificial intelligence. Flaumenhaft will further her studies at the University of Michigan. Both have been student-athletes.

Dillon and Flaumenhaft were among 224 seniors who graduated from Sayville this week. The coronavirus and remote learning made for a tumultuous final two months of their high school careers, but the graduates nonetheless finished with pride.

Principal Ron Hoffer noted to the board how Dillon leads by example with grace and dignity.

“Simply put, he is an exceptional and humble young man,” Hoffer said. “A young man who excels in the athletic arena as a varsity cross country and track runner, and as an accomplished research and science and engineering student.

“He is independent and confident in both his thoughts and actions,” Hoffer added.

The principal also lauded the talents of Flaumenhaft, calling her “brilliant and focused.”

“She has a passion to learn and a thirst for knowledge, which is undeniable,” he said. “As a varsity athlete on our softball and basketball teams, and a talented science research competitor studying geospatial and risk analysis of hurricanes, she has made an indelible mark in both arenas.”
