The words were music to the ears Wednesday of foodies across the Greater Sayville area who flocked to dozens of area restaurants with outdoor dining.
Long Island entered phase two of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s New York Forward plan, which includes alfresco dining, along with professional services, such as hair salons and barbershops (by appointment only); retail with limited capacity; administrative support and real estate / rental and leasing.
Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce President Eileen Tyznar explained that “it actually felt like the heartbeat and the pulse of Main Street were back” in Sayville.
“Seeing people once again walking around with store shopping bags and sitting outside and eating just felt like things were finally going back to a slow normal again,” she said. “We can’t wait until the next phase opens up even more of our businesses, so we can feel whole again.”
Islip Town granted temporary outdoor dining/tent permits to more than 50 restaurants in preparation for the phase two reopening.
“It was the collective cooperation of each individual doing their part, that has brought us to today’s phase two reopening,” Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter said. “We have worked so hard together as a town to get to this point, where we can once again enjoy outdoor dining.
“We need to remain diligent by continuing to wear face coverings and maintain social distancing, in order to avoid a setback,” she said.
Restaurants are required to only seat customers for alfresco style dining, with tables at least six feet apart and restaurant employees wearing masks. Customers too need to wear masks when not seated at their tables.
