Greater Sayville coverage is funded in part by The Shed, your scratch kitchen for brunch and dinner daily at 21 Main St. in West Sayville.
It won’t be the kind of Memorial Day march that Sayville traditionally hosts, but the community’s American Legion Smith-Wever Post #651 is set to host a scaled-down, vehicle-only parade in town on Monday.
Post #651 members, including Sayville American Legion Riders, will take part in an 11 a.m. car and motorcycle parade that will start at St. Lawrence the Martyr Roman Catholic Church and head east on Main Street to Sparrow Park in downtown Sayville.
Members of the community can join the parade in cars decorated in honor of the men and women who served and sacrificed in the U.S. military, or they can stand and watch the procession, while practicing social distancing from people outside their household.
All participants and visitors are asked to wear breathing basks.
GreaterSayville.com reported earlier this month that because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the official Sayville Memorial Day Parade was cancelled by the Sayville Fire Department. Thousands of people typically line Main Street for the parade, a longstanding Sayville tradition.
Earlier on Monday, members of the American Legion Smith-Wever post, along with members of other local organizations, will solemnly lay wreaths at Sparrow Park at 9 a.m.
