All over Bayport and Blue Point are the lawn signs: “BBP ❤️Franny.”
The signs have been popping up for weeks to honor and support lifetime community member Franny Columbini, 76, who was critically injured April 6 in a hit-and-run accident, as he rode his bicycle along Blue Point Avenue.
On Tuesday just before 1 p.m., residents lined the same street, six feet apart, to deliver a royal welcome home to their beloved “Frannie,” who arrived back in Blue Point via a police escort after spending six weeks recovering in the hospital.
During Columbini’s convalescence, his friends back home created a “Franny Strong” Facebook group. The photos and memories shared in the group lifted Columbini’s spirit during his hospital stay.
Meanwhile, the community started churning out the “BBP ❤️Franny” signs, accepting a $10 suggested donation for each sign, to raise money to help offset medical and other expenses related to Columbini’s injuries.
