‘Friday Night Lights’ tribute to Sayville High School senior class tonight

|

It’s all about the kids tonight in Sayville.

The community is honoring graduating seniors from Sayville and Connetquot high school in two special ways.

First, Sayville Public Schools has organized a “Friday Night Lights” tribute that asks residents from 8:20-9:20 p.m. to put on their porch lights and businesses to put on their outdoor lights to honor Sayville schools students, especially the 12th graders.

Second, the West Sayville and Sayville fire departments will join neighboring fire departments in sounding their fire engine sirens in honor of the Class of 2020 at Sayville and Connetquot High Schools.

“We have the honor of two schools districts residing in our area, Connetquot and Sayville,” the West Sayville F.D. said in a Facebookpost. ” “Many of us attended these schools and had the luxury of our senior year not being cut short due to a pandemic.

“This is for all those missed banquets, proms, graduations and other once-in-a-lifetime events. So we want to recognize those students graduating by this small gesture,” the post continued.

In another gesture honoring high school seniors, the lights will be turned on high school stadiums across Suffolk.

Earlier today, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that schools will remain closed for the rest of the academic year due to the ongoing threat of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

This means the Class of 2020’s last day of in-person school was March 13.
