Connetquot spring sports coaches pay tribute to every 2020 senior athlete at ceremony in Bohemia

|

The season may now be officially lost, but Connetquot’s “T-bird Nation” let it go in as classy a way as possible.

Connetquot High School coaches came together — at a safe distance — last week to pay tribute to the school’s senior athletes during a recorded presentation at the high school stadium.

The stadium’s lights were turned on Thursday night at 8:20 p.m. for 20 minutes and “2020” was posted on the scoreboard, as the nine varsity coaches took turns delivering heartfelt messages to their graduating athletes.

“Don’t think that your hard work, perseverance and preparation were a waste of time,” said Peter Melore, Connetquot’s director of health, physical education, athletics and recreation. “This process that you’ve been a part of, to prepare for this spring, is extremely important, and it will pay off down the road.

“I know you can’t compete this season, but this is certainly preparing you for life,” he added.

The coaches’ tribute came two days after Long Island athletic administrators announced the cancellation of the spring school sports season due to continued health and safety concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Thursday’s ceremony was part of the national “Be the Light Initiative” honoring high school senior athletes.
