Northwell: Hypertension, obesity and diabetes are most common underlying conditions in COVID-19 patients across Long Island and New York City

Researchers at Northwell Health determined that hypertension, obesity and diabetes were the most common underlying conditions of patients hospitalized with COVID-19, the state’s largest health system said today in a news release.

The Northwell Health COVID-19 Research Consortium findings — published today in the The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) — show that 57 percent of 5,700 Northwell patients hospitalized from March 1 to April 4 also suffered from hypertension.

The study said 41 percent of the patients were obese and 34 percent had diabetes. Many of the COVID-19 patients had two or more comorbidities.

Patients with diabetes were more likely to have been placed on a ventilator, received treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) or developed acute kidney disease, reports the study, which had support from Northwell’s Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research.

Northwell operates 23 hospitals, including Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead and Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson.

Here’s what else Northwell learned

Of the 2,634 hospitalized patients for whom outcomes were known, 14 percent were treated in the ICU, 12 percent received invasive mechanical ventilation and 3 percent had kidney replacement therapy, the study reports.

One-in-five COVID-19 patients died, according to the study. And 88 percent of the patients placed on a ventilator died. On average, patients were discharged after four days.

Kevin J. Tracey, MD, president and CEO of the Feinstein Institutes, said the study provides “a crucial early insight into the front-line response to the COVID-19 outbreak in New York.”

“These observational studies and other randomized clinical trial results from the Feinstein Institutes will improve the care for others confronting COVID outbreaks,” he said.

Karina W. Davidson, Ph.D., MASc, professor and senior vice president at the Feinstein Institutes, added that the health system’s COVID-19 research consortium will continue to share clinical and scientific insights on the coronavirus.

“New York has become the epicenter of this epidemic,” she said. “Clinicians, scientists, statisticians and laboratory professionals are working tirelessly to provide best care and comfort to the thousands of COVID-19 patients in our Northwell hospitals.”
