Northwell Health: Nurses and other COVID-19 frontliners at Southside Hospital to each get $2,500 bonus as thanks for ‘heroic’ work during pandemic

Nurses, respiratory therapists and housekeepers are among the hundreds of COVID-19 frontline workers at nearby Southside Hospital who will each get a $2,500 bonus and an extra week of paid vacation from Northwell Health.

More than 45,000 of the giant health system’s “heroic” workers are in line to receive the lump-sum payments and increased time off, Northwell President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Dowling said.

“Our dedicated staff’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic has been nothing short of heroic,” he said. “Thanks to the courage and commitment of our front-line caregivers, we answered the call, in service to the patients and communities who entrust us with their care.

“As an organization, we want to continue to support, motivate and inspire our team members,” Dowling continued. “We celebrate their wins, recognize their heroic work and amplify the outpouring of community support they are receiving for their courageous actions.”

Northwell is the state’s largest healthcare system, operating 23 hospitals, including three on Long Island: Southside in Bay Shore, Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson and Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead.

Serving many surrounding communities hit particularly hard by COVID-19, Southside quickly became inundated with patients suffering from the virus.

Since the coronavirus crisis began in early March, Northwell hospitals have treated and discharged more than 6,100 patients; over 2,600 remain hospitalized.
