Five fun flicks: Sayville Cinemas guarantee these family movies will lift your spirit

|

In light of the difficult and uncertain times brought on by the coronavirus — including the fact that there’s no telling when we’ll be able to return to eat movie theater popcorn again — our friends at Sayville Cinemas have developed a great list of uplifting movies to watch at home with your family.

“All of these movies are either comedic feel-good movies, or movies that have underlying themes about family and the importance of looking at the bigger picture in life and remaining positive and productive,” said Jesse and Liz, the managers at Sayville Cinemas.

The movie theater — which can’t be beat for its $5 matinees and inexpensive delicious snacks — looks forward to opening back up to the community.

In the mean time, here are their feel good five:

STORKS (2016)

Free with Amazon Prime Video

Storks deliver babies — or at least they used to. Now, they deliver packages for a global internet retail giant. Junior, the company’s top delivery stork, lands in hot water when the Baby Factory produces an adorable but wholly unauthorized girl. Desperate to deliver this bundle of trouble, Junior and his friend Tulip, the only human on Stork Mountain, race against time to make their first baby drop. This movie tells us what’s really important in times like this: Spend time with family and make memories!

Cheaper by the Dozen (2003)

Available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video

Tom and Kate Baker have compromised their careers to raise 12 children. Tom coaches a high-school football team, while Kate has retired from journalism to raise the family. Things change when Tom is offered a college coaching job in a new city at the same time a publisher buys Kate’s parenting memoir. After moving, Kate goes on a book tour, leaving Tom in charge of the children, who — already unhappy about relocating — plunge the household into chaos.

Mamma Mia! (2008)

Available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video

Donna, an independent hotelier in the Greek islands, is preparing for her daughter’s wedding with the help of two old friends. Meanwhile Sophie, the spirited bride, has a plan. She secretly invites three men from her mother’s past in hope of meeting her real father and having him escort her down the aisle on her big day.

Space Jam (1996)

Available for free with Netflix membership

Swackhammer, an evil alien theme park owner, needs a new attraction at Moron Mountain. When his gang, the Nerdlucks, heads to Earth to kidnap Bugs Bunny and other Looney Tunes characters, Bugs challenges them to a basketball game to determine their fate. The aliens agree, but they steal the powers of NBA basketball players, including Larry Bird and Charles Barkley — so Bugs enlists superstar Michael Jordan to help his team.

Bedtime Stories (2008)

Available with a Disney+ membership or to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video

Hotel handyman Skeeter Bronson gets an unexpected surprise when he discovers that the tall tales he has been telling his niece and nephew are somehow coming true. Hoping to make the most of the mysterious phenomenon, Skeeter spins one outlandish yarn after another, but the children’s unexpected contributions to the stories turn Skeeter’s life upside down.
