Responding to community concerns about the possible impact of coronavirus, Sayville Schools this week informed parents and guardians that the district is closely monitoring the situation and continues to take safety measures to protect the health of its students.
“We will closely monitor the ongoing events and protocols related to the Coronavirus and its impact on our schools,” Sayville Schools Superintendent John Stimmel said in a letter to parents and guardians. “We will do everything within our power to ensure the health and safety of our students, staff, and visitors.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday that the number of coronavirus cases in New York state doubled overnight to 22. One of the new cases is a man hospitalized in Nassau County. Across the United States, there are at least 205 cases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported today.
The governor noted that New York is significantly increasing its testing for the virus and that people with compromised immune systems should be particularly vigilant.
Stimmel said the district is following guidance from the CDC, the New York State Department of Health, the Suffolk County Department of Health and the New York State Education Department.
“The district employs cleaning procedures and uses cleaning products that help to ensure frequently touched and high-trafficked areas of our school remain clean and germ free,” Stimmel wrote, adding that the district’s principals, nurses, faculty and staff encourage students to adhere to the following CDC tips for staying healthy:
- Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Stay home when sick.
- Cover coughs/sneezes with a tissue. Immediately dispose of used tissue. Do not cover coughs/sneezes with your hands (use the inside of your elbow if you don’t have a tissue).
“If you or a family member displays symptoms of a respiratory disease, you are encouraged to consult your health care provider immediately,” Stimel added.
