Cavanaugh’s hosting party for Olympic hopeful Jack Flood of Blue Point this weekend

|

The Bayport-Blue Point community is chomping at the bit to see one of its favorite sons go for the gold at the Olympics in Tokyo this summer.

Hence, the big party on tap at Cavanaugh’s in Blue Point this Sunday, March 8, with the man of the hour, decathlete Jack Flood, serving as the special guest.

“We have great faith in what Jack can accomplish with a little help from the Long Island community,” said Angela and Jim Stelling, who are organizing the fundraising event at the popular bar and restaurant, scheduled for 2-5 p.m.

The Stellings explained that Flood has worked part-time as a substitute teacher to pay for his equipment, physical therapy, entry fees and travel expenses for competitions worldwide.

“This has limited his training opportunities,” they said. “Our help can alleviate some of his financial burden and propel him to the world-class athlete we know he can become.”

Flood, a 2013 graduate of Bayport-Blue Point High School and a former NCAA Division III athlete at SUNY Cortland, will compete at several national competitions leading up to the June Olympic Trials in Oregon. He needs to place in the top three among decathlon athletes to qualify for Olympics. As of last December, he was ranked 10th in the United States.

Over the last year, Flood placed third at the U.S. indoor championships in the heptathlon and eighth at his first U.S. outdoor track and field championships in the decathlon.

All of the proceeds from Sunday’s event at Cavanaugh’s will go toward supporting Flood in his pursuit of reaching the Olympics.

Here’s what else you need to know about the event:

• Organizers have put together over 40 baskets to be awarded in a chance auction. The baskets are filled with donated items from businesses and other entities in the Bayport-Blue Point area and across Suffolk County. Twenty bucks will get you a sheet of 26 tickets for the auction.

• The winning share for the event’s 50/50 raffle has already reached $800. Tickets can be purchased at the event, or if you can’t make, you can buy the $10 tickets beforehand at Cavanaugh’s, Bayport Flower House and Sayville Running Company.

• If you are can’t make it on Sunday but would like to show your support for Flood, you can donate to Flood’s GoFundMe page.

• Cavanaugh’s is located at 255 Blue Point Ave. in Blue Point.
