You too can move like Shakira: Brookhaven offers Belly Dance classes in Blue Point

Considering the health benefits and the price, registering for this class seems like a no-brainer.

An eight-week Belly Dancing class is on tap for March and April at the Henrietta Acampora Recreation Center in Blue Point. The Town of Brookhaven is offering the course for just $45.

The benefits of belly dancing — weight loss, core strengthening, posture improvement and achieving grace among them — are well documented (see below for a full list of benefits).

It’s also pretty entertaining and can be highly artistic. Consider Shakira’s Super Bowl LIV halftime performance earlier this month and her dancing in “Hips Don’t Lie.”

The shimmying and shaking in Blue Point starts up Monday, March 9, 6:30-7:30 p.m., with the class’ first session. The class continues on the next seven Mondays, finishing up on April 27. Deadline to register is Friday, March 6.

Emphasis will be placed on basic belly dance techniques and steps. Participants, who need to be at least 18 years old, are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and non-slip socks. Sorry, no sneakers.
