Say it ain’t the Bohemia one: Modell’s closing 24 stores, including one on Long Island

|

Not another one.

The Modell’s inside Bohemia’s beleaguered Sayville Plaza could be on the chopping block. The sporting goods chain announced this week that it will close 24 locations — including one on Long Island — is an effort to keep the company afloat, according to reports.

Already this year, Kmart and Pier 1 Imports have shutdown their stores in the Sayville Plaza. Tons of unused retail space blanket the shopping center, which previously saw the demise of Sports Authority, Borders Books and Babies R Us.

Just 10 businesses — including a Burger King and a Chase bank that only offers an ATM machine — remain in operation.

Modell’s has 13 locations on Long Island, including six in Suffolk County.

Mitch Modell, the chain’s CEO and owner, said the closures are an effort to save his business.
