Kmart is gone: Here’s what’s left at the Sayville Plaza

|

The retail store apocalypse swallowed up another Sayville Plaza victim over the weekend.

Kmart, following in the footsteps of Pier 1 Imports, Borders Bookstore and Sports Authority and other stores in the Bohemia shopping plaza, closed its doors for the last time on Sunday. The department store’s departure leaves another giant space in what once upon a time was a retail area teeming with shoppers and cars.

Here’s a rundown of the 10 establishments still standing — some on shaky ground — at the Sayville Plaza.

Chipotle

Chipotles across America on Friday, Feb. 21, are offering a buy-one-get-one deal on burritos and all other entree items to customers wearing hockey jerseys. The “Wear Your Hockey Jersey” program celebrates “Hockey Week Across America,” an event that pays homage to the U.S. hockey team’s “Miracle on Ice” victory in the Olympics over the Soviet Union on Feb. 21, 1980.

Bed Bath & Beyond

Many self-styled local retail “experts” are predicting on social media that this is the next Sayville Plaza storefront to go dark. And rightly so.

The struggling retail chain announced in January that it would close 41 stores across the country in the early months of 2020. The Bohemia store is not on the list.

Same-store sales at Bed Bath & Beyond — considered a crucial measure of a retailer’s health — have been negative since May 2017. Given that, new CEO Mark Tritton announced this week that the struggling chain would use $1 billion in 2020 to reinvest in stores and upgrade technology, and on debt reduction and share buybacks.

The immediate results had Bed Bath & Beyond shares rising sharply on Wednesday. So, there’s at least a glimmer of hope that the Bohemia store isn’t going anywhere for now.

Modell’s

Slumping sales has Modell’s Sporting Good Inc. this week weighing what options it can take to avoid bankruptcy. Mitchell Modell, chairman and CEO of the 131-year-old sporting goods empire, told Crain’s New York Business on Monday that he’s looking for an outside investor who can keep the doors open.

Meanwhile, local vendors do what they can to lure in customers. Case in point: the “Blowout Deals!” inside the Sayville Plaza Modell’s this week.

Old Navy

Old Navy’s parent company Gap plans to close more than 200 Gap-branded stores over the next two years, but Gap continues to open Old Navy stores across the country, including three in New Jersey, according to reports. It seems Old Navy is anchored in Bohemia for a while.

Burger King

There is of course Burger King, with all of its yumminess, including the recently introduced Beyond Meat Impossible Whopper, featuring a plant-based patty.

But then there’s this weird commercial Burger King has started airing that has a lot of folks grossed out. It’s an effort to demonstrate the authenticity of their Whopper ingredients. If you think you can stomach it, check it out:

Panera Bread

The soups, that bread and the cozy spots by the fireplace. Panera Bread and all its inviting attributes linger on at the Sayville Plaza, despite the recent exit of its neighbor to the west, Pier 1 Imports.

Panera is open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday to Saturday. On Sunday, the hours are 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Click here to order online, then pick up your items at Panera.

Sprint

A cool fact about Sprint: You don’t even need to be on their network to qualify for their $49 screen repair deal on Samsung Galaxy phones. The wireless carrier offers the cheap repair on busted Galaxy S7, S8, S8 Plus, S9, S9 Plus and Note 8 devices. The Bohemia store is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

The Vitamin Shoppe

Vitamins, and protein, and CBD. Oh my! The Vitamin Shoppe is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Click here to shop online, and then pick up your items at the store. You’ll get an email when your order is ready.
