Go Greek opens restaurant in Bohemia, its second Long Island location

|

Run of the mill Greek-American gyros are typically made using a giant sausage-like cone of seasoned minced beef and lamb. They usually taste pretty good, but come loaded with saturated fat and lord knows how many ingredients.

That is N-O-T what you’re going to get at the new Go Greek restaurant in Bohemia. Now open at 4611 Sunrise Highway (in the shopping center that is also home to Starbuck’s and Saviano’s Restaurant and Pizza), Go Greek favors the traditional process of making gyros — hand butchering and stacking the meat on the spit for roasting.

“What sets Go Greek apart is our family’s commitment to using family recipes and real, fresh food. We use fresh chicken stock, fresh vegetables and fruit, and serve grains and greens, as well as grilled meats and handcrafted gyro,” said Gabriella Matheos, who owns Go Greek with her husband Tommy.

The Holbrook couple will host a grand opening this Saturday, Feb. 22.

“We want people to have the best of the Mediterranean diet, which research shows is one of the healthiest in the world. We also want them to feel like family,” Gabriella Matheos said.

This is Tommy and Gabriella Matheos’ second Go Greek venture. The first, opened in 2016 in Garden City, has been a huge success.

“Bohemia was a natural fit for us, since we live in Holbrook and knew there weren’t many options for people who love authentic Greek food,” Gabriella Matheos said.

“Our Garden City location has really succeeded because we weren’t serving any old ‘Greek food.’ In a neighborhood with a large community of Greek people, we were so proud to serve food that other Greeks enjoyed or would compare to the taste of food ‘back home,'” she added.

The couple also takes pride in making available a menu that caters to diners with a wide variety of dietary restrictions. Their son son, Zack, was born with severe dairy and gluten allergies.

“We know what it’s like to deal with food allergies and an on-the-go lifestyle,” Gabriella Matheos said. “Being able to bring food home is a blessing for most families, but no one is willing to risk their child’s life if a restaurant can’t work with a severe food allergy.”

The Matheos made sure Go Greek offers plenty of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options.

“We’re so proud that we were able to create a restaurant that’s Greek in its sense of hospitality — everyone can be served something that’s good for them,” Gabriella Matheos said.
