Blue Point couple is headed back to America after evacuation from cruise ship in Japan

|

A young Blue Point husband and wife are among hundreds of Americans on their way home today after they were evacuated from a cruise ship in Japan that had reported nearly 300 cases of coronavirus.

Milena Basso Cerullo reported to friends on Facebook that she and her newlywed husband Guy Cerullo are on a bus that will take them to a nearby airport in Japan. They are expected to then board a charter flight bound for the Travis Air Force Base in California, according to an email sent Saturday by the U.S. embassy in Japan to nearly 400 U.S. citizens on board the Diamond Princess.

Some ship passengers and crew will continue on to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, according to the letter. The evacuees – who have already been quarantined on the cruise ship for 13 days – will be required to stay on quarantine for another 14 days in the United States.

Cruise ship passengers exhibiting coronavirus symptoms were expected to remain and be treated in Japan.

“Passengers will be screened for symptoms and we are working with our Japanese partners to ensure that any symptomatic passengers receive the required care in Japan if they cannot board the flight,” the U.S. embassy letter said.

At least 40 U.S. citizens on the cruise ship have been diagnosed with coronavirus during its nearly two weeks on quarantine. Two other Blue Point residents, according to friends and a family member, were on the ship.
