Sayville’s proposed bike-share program still in play

|

Sayville is pedaling back a stroke or two on its plan to bring a bike-share program to the hamlet, but business officials remain steadfast in their goal to link the train station, downtown and the ferry terminals via bicycle.

Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce President Eileen Tyznar said Tuesday that the chamber is working with county officials to “at least have bicycles that can go between the train station and the ferries, and Main Street over to the county parks.”

“We are looking for safer bike pathways since we don’t have bike lanes,” Tyznar said during a Chamber of Commerce meeting in Butera’s of Sayville. “It might be a scaled down version, but we are not abandoning this project.”

In July, the chamber announced its intentions to bring a bike-share program to town. Patchogue and Babylon rolled out bike-share programs in August.

Bike-share programs make bicycles available for shared use to individuals on a short term basis. The original plan discussed for Sayville had included bicycle stations at Loughlin Vineyards and Sayville Marina Park Beach.

Tyznar has said that a bike-share program is one way “to have more people shop, wine and dine in Sayville and West Sayville.”
