Islip receives $1 million state grant to modernize MacArthur Airport terminal

|

One of America’s favorite small airports is set to get another facelift.

Islip’s MacArthur Airport will use a $1 million state grant to support improvements and modernization of its main terminal, including the baggage claim area, and roof and vestibule repairs.

The grant is part of Gov. Cuomo’s Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) 2019 Awards. It comes on the heels of the $5.4 million in federal grants the airport received during the fall for facility improvements.

“Upgrades to MacArthur Airport help bring jobs and opportunity to the entire Long Island region,” Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter said this week.

Commissioner of Aviation Shelley LaRose-Arken added: “Customers frequently evaluate their travel experience based upon airport amenities. Fast and efficient baggage claim is high on their list.”

The airport in 2019 upgraded its runways, signagen and the Fire Rescue Building.

“We will be actively continuing this trend in the year ahead to provide an excellent customer experience and well-run facility,” LaRose-Arken said.

MacArthur, which serves about 1.6 million passengers annually is a nominee for the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Small Airport. Voting takes place through noon on Jan. 13.

Members of the public may cast one vote each day at the 10Best website. The 10 winners will be announced Jan. 24.

“Our ongoing commitment to improving the airport helps us welcome visitors from outside the state looking to discover all Long Island has to offer,” said Carpenter. “This includes a hassle-free experience for business travelers and convenience for people taking holidays.”
