Coan and Wisconsin narrowly fall to Oregon in Rose Bowl

|

Jack Coan and Wisconsin fell just a little short of a big win in the Rose Bowl on Wednesday, losing a see-saw battle to No. 6 Oregon, 28-27, in front of more than 75,000 fans in Pasadena, California.

The Sayville High School alum led an offensive attack that had the Badgers up 27-21 early in the fourth quarter. He passed for 186 yards and one touchdown, completing 23 of 35 passes.

Coan connected on an 11-yard touchdown pass with Quintez Cephus with 11 seconds remaining in the first half, giving Wisconsin (10-4) a 17-14 halftime lead.

After several lead changes, the Badgers fell behind for the final time when Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert rushed for his third touchdown of the game — this time on a 30-yard run with 7:41 to play.

Throughout the game, Coan was lauded by the ESPN broadcast team for his composure and focus in the pocket. The junior entered the Rose Bowl with the seventh-best pass completion percentage in the nation and ranked 15th in the country for pass efficiency.

In his first full season as the Badgers’ starting quarterback, he threw for more than 2,700 yards and had 17 touchdown passes.

Coan — a Sayville football legend who in 2016 earned the Hansen Award as Suffolk County’s top football player and this week was tapped by Newsday as the top football player on Long Island during the 2010s — earlier this month earned Academic All-Big Ten Team honors for the fall semester.
