L.I. Maritime Museum’s ‘Tis the Season’ event is this weekend in West Sayville

|

The Long Island Maritime Museum in West Sayville hosts it annual Dutch Christmas festival this weekend.

“‘Tis the Season” celebrates the area’s Dutch heritage, focusing on the Dutch settlers and the holiday traditions they brought to Sayville and West Sayville.

The Saturday event gets going at 4 p.m. and lasts until 7 p.m. In between, visitors can take part in a holiday lantern tour, ornament crafts, face painting and seasonal musical entertainment.

One of the event’s highlights is the opportunity for children — young and old — to interact and have photos taken with Sinterklaas.

The forerunner to Santa Claus, Sinterklaas — or Sint Nicolaas — is a pretty cool character. Though, he’s not nearly as economical as Santa is with his time.

Sinterklaas shows up in Holland in the middle of November, then chills for three weeks, hanging out with families across the country. Sint Nicolaas Day on Dec. 6 is the high point of the Dutch holiday season.

Admission to “‘Tis the Season” is $5, and it includes a gift for each child. Visitors are encouraged to bring donations of new, unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots. There will also be hot chocolate and light refreshments.

Founded in 1966, the museum is located at 88 West Ave., on the historic West Sayville waterfront.
