20 Photos: Thornhill’s is back in lights, renovated iconic building hosts art event

|

The neon sign that’s here to stay is finally lit again.

Matthew and Lauri La Piana — the new owners of the Thornhill’s building in downtown Sayville — hosted an art gallery Saturday night inside the renovated space. The elegant “Light the Night Pink” event culminated with the re-lighting of the locally famous Thornhill’s Rexall sign, outside above the entrance.

The La Pianas worked with the Greater Chamber of Commerce President Eileen Tyznar to organize the event, with a portion of the proceeds from art sales going to benefit Stony Brook Medicine’s Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center.

“is was such an amazing night for our West Sayville/Sayville community,” Tyznar said. “It was so nice to end the night with the newly refurbished, iconic Thornhill’s sign illuminating our Main Street once again.”

Offices on the second floor of the building will be used by the La Pianas for their own businesses. But the couple is still on the hunt for a business to be their ground-floor tenant. Matthew La Piana, 45, said the cool neon sign will remain out front, regardless of who the tenant turns out to be.

He has noted that he would preferably rent the first floor and basement to either a boutique toy store or a vintage book store. He is also open to the idea of a temporary pop-up store occupying the space.

In the mean time, Saturday provided an opportunity for the La Pianas to mingle with the community and to show off the renovated space.

Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce photographer Craig Sweezey was there to catch all the fun. Below, check out his collection of great photos. Be sure to click on boxes 2, 3 and 4 to see them all.
