And the Golden Flashes come marching in for homecoming

|

Homecoming is always a great time for downtown Sayville and the high school, but it’s a whole other level when the football team is still undefeated.

Such is the case tomorrow, Oct. 19, when the Golden Flashes, now 5-0 after two consecutive thrilling come-from-behind wins over East Islip and Comsewogue, host Harborfields on the grass field at the high school.

The annual festivities start at noon when the homecoming parade kicks off from the Sayville Fire Department, located at 107 North Main St. Students from the high school’s four classes will march their floats down Main Street, and then to the high school.

The teens will be joined in the march by the high school band, high school and middle school cheerleading squads, youth sports athletes, Rotary Club members and volunteer firefighters, among others.

Once at the field — about 1 p.m. — the freshman and sophomore class will each perform skits to entertain the crowd. Juniors and seniors will perform their skits at halftime of the 2 p.m. football game.

The Golden Flashes, led by quarterback Jack Cheshire, who sometimes seems to throw touchdown passes at will this season, are looking to remain in first place in Suffolk County’s Division III.

Earlier this season, Cheshire tossed five touchdown passes in an overtime win over Westhampton. He completed three touchdown throws in last Saturday’s win over Comsewogue.

A school official said the class winner of the skit competition will be announced during the second half of the game.
