Seniors Douglas McDonough and Jacob Lurie are Bayport-Blue Point High School’s Class of 2020 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, the district announced this week.
Douglas has served as the president of the National Honor Society and has been a member of Science Olympiad, Mathletes, Tri-M Music Honor Society and Chamber Orchestra. Additionally, he has participated in the annual school musicals and serves as secretary of the Debate Club at the high school.
In recognition of his talents, Douglas also received the University of Rochester’s Bausch + Lomb Honorary Science Award, winners of which are automatically considered for the Bausch + Lomb Science Scholarship at the university.
When it comes to college though, Douglas is still weighing his options this fall. He plans to pursue a degree in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Jacob has been a three-sport athlete for Bayport-Blue Point, playing football competing for the track & field team. He is the Science Olympiad captain, an active member of the Interact Club and an accomplished musician, contributing his talents to the pit orchestra and both the symphonic and jazz bands. Additionally, he is a member of the Superintendent’s Student Council, the School Improvement Team, the Tri-M Music Honor Society and the National Honors Society.
Jacob has also given back to his school and community by serving as the student representative on the district’s board of education. Like his classmate Douglas, Jacob is still in the decision-making process when it comes to where he’ll go to college. He is looking to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.
