20 photos: ‘North’ prevails over ‘South’ — again — at ‘Civil War Weekend’ in Sayville

History lovers descended upon the 11th annual “Civil War Weekend” at the Islip Grange in Sayville this weekend, taking in battle preparations and re-enactments, Union and Confederate soldier camps, and plenty of other demonstrations.

“We’re here to teach. It’s not just self-indulgent, ‘Let’s blow some powder.’ It’s about, ‘Let’s pass on some knowledge,'” said Max Kenny, aka Lt. William Kent of Co. K, 67th New York Infantry, The First Long Island Volunteers, following a battle demonstration Sunday afternoon.

Kenny stressed how important it is to maintain knowledge about American history. “Because once you lose your history, you’ve pretty much lost your soul,” he added.

“Civil War Weekend” is the longest running Civil War re-enactment on Long Island. Both days featured compelling battle reenactments won by the Union soldiers.

GreaterSayville.com was there Sunday to capture many of the educating moments. Check out the following photos, and be sure to click on boxes 2, 3 and 4 to see them all.
